If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms then you may have TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)
TMD refers to a variety of conditions that affect your jaw joints, jaw muscles and facial nerves.
  • pain in or around the ear
  • headaches and neck aches
  • tenderness of the jaw or jaw muscles
  • jaw pain or soreness that is more prevalent in the morning or late afternoon
  • jaw pain when chewing, biting or yawning
  • difficulty opening and closing the mouth or a change in the way teeth fit together
  • clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth
  • sensitive, sore or worn chipped teeth when no other dental problems can be found

Causes of TMD

If the problem is disc related then it could be because the disc has become worn or moved out of alignment. The joint cartilage may be affected by arthritis. Sometimes the joint can be affected by trauma

If the problem is muscle related, the jaw muscles may have been put under extreme stress by night time tooth clenching.

This is called nocturnal bruxism and this may be caused by anxiety, medications and sleep disorders.

If it is bite related, recent dental work may have put the normal tooth biting position out of sync.

In many cases the cause of TMD is unclear. It seems to be more prevalent is females and there has been a suggested connection to female hormones.
