What are they and what causes them?
Jowls are deformities of the skin along the jawline. They contain fat and the skin over them is loose. They hang down from the jawline just behind the corner of the mouth and can make the appearance look older. They may also look worse when there is fat or volume loss in front or behind them along the jawline.
They occur as part of the ageing process. The skin in this area become less elastic and the weight of fat pulls them down and forward from above and behind. Their position is dictated by retaining ligaments under the skin.
How can we treat them?
If lifting and supporting hyaluronic acid fillers are placed in the cheek area and the back of the jaw this can often start to lift the face back up again. Then the jawline can be contoured with calcium hydroxyapatite fillers to disguise in front and behind the jowls to make the jawline look much smoother.
